Ataun is a small town located in the south of Gipuzkoa, in Goierri valley. Its lands adjoin Navarre, and are part of Aralar Natural Park. Despite being near the industrial area of the region, Ataun still has a strong connection with pasturage, agriculture and nature. It covers an area of 58.9 km2 and is 196 metres above sea level.

It is the longest town in Gipuzkoa (14 km) and its population is scattered throughout several neighbourhoods, the most important being San Martin, San Gregorio and Aia.

The river Agauntza goes through Ataun. The valley is protected by the following mountains, among others: Areetza (982), Aitxu (968), Arantzamendi (777), Muñoan (912), Saatsamendi (952), Sarastarri (989), Leizadi (921), Aizkoate (631) and Intzartzu (826).
